The upper and lower back have 5 layers of muscle. If you get a massage in most cases the first 2 layers of muscle will get very relaxed. With spinal pain conditions, they will  involve postural muscles that are mostly in layers 3,4 5 of your back. These muscles are the ones that are primarily treated, though some outer layer muscles are addressed. In the process of your evaluation I will show you which muscles are imbalanced and how the process of correcting them can progress.

 Myofascial and Trigger Point Therapy

In order for muscles to function at their best, they must be able to contract completely and, more importantly, relax completely. Mechanical stresses to the body such as a repetitive motion or sitting at a computer for hours can result in muscular tightening and irritation. This is known as myofascial restrictions and trigger point development. A more significant event such as a fall or auto accident can result in muscle tightness, restricted movement, and eventual nerve and muscle pain. The symptoms may begin as a mild or occasional ache, and then progress to a more intense level. The pain can be localized to the site of muscular tightness or felt in another part of the body – a condition known as referred pain. Other symptoms of myofascial trigger points include limited range of motion, muscle weakness, numbness, and tingling. Sleep disturbance and depression might also occur if the pain has been chronic.

Myofascial therapy and trigger point therapy, are specialized and very effective hands-on technique that provides sustained pressure into tight, restrictive muscles to help eliminate that pain and restore motion. For example, the neck may not be able to turn freely and fully due to muscular restrictions. This muscle based therapy allows for a greater range of motion as well as pain relief. Stretching and specific exercises, along with an awareness of posture and reducing repetitive tasks, will also enhance your progress.
